Logo Design Process

My first step is acquainting myself with the project ahead of me! I read the brief or client questionnaire and then I gather all of the information I know about the company and logo vision into one place.

Before any designing begins, I make a word map, starting with the company name and company values and expanding through word association. Using the web chart created from my word mapping, I group words into logo ideas.

At this point, I take a pencil to paper and get sketching! This step of creating initial ideas often isn’t pretty, but you can see the visions start to come to life. Once I have sketched all of my ideas, I choose the best concepts to take digital.

I then move into idea development in Illustrator. This includes polishing the logo ideas and finding fonts.

From here, I usually choose one logo, but sometimes multiple concepts get to go through the next step: creating other logo variations including the submark and icon.

So far, everything has been done in black and white! Now it is time to add color by first creating a color palette and then applying it to the logos. I also get to experiment with different icons and shapes to create a brand pattern.

Finally, I gather everything I have created into a condensed “Brand Guidelines” page; which you can see at the top of the page!
